     For your particular path (12 miles at 2.5 GHz) the freespace (LOS) path loss would be about 126 dB.  I used one of several available online path loss calculators.  You'll have to plug in things like Pout, Gtx, Grx, cable loss at both ends and minimal RX signal required to find out whether a particular equipment suite will work.  Include a good margin (maybe 15 dB) to allow for fade through 12 miles of varying atmosphere.  
 
     Regarding "altitude diversity,"  you have to be mindful of Fresnel zone clearance, especially for the lower of the two TX antennas.  As with "path loss," Google is your friend.

I haven't been following this thread closely, but are we only talking about
going 100 feet? That is nothing for wireless. I have a very stable 5.6 mile
wireless network link that supports 30 Mbps 24x7x365. It uses Ubiquiti
Bullet HP radios and 24 dBi dishes at each end, but I've turned the power
way down because full power gives -47 dBm signals - much more than needed.
Admittedly system cost was around $300.

Newer 2x2 MIMO devices should double the speed.
