If you have a period correct replica of a 1920s transmitter on 
display in your living room (doesn't everyone?), polishing the coils 
periodically IS a great idea. Also, handle them with cotton gloves, 
never your bare hands (unless you enjoy polishing coils). Hmm, it 
has been a while since I polished mine...

I suspect it is UV more than water which is the enemy of THHN 
outdoors, but I have never had any issues other than the thin outer 
clear coat peeling off as noted by others.
