The higher the truss support the less compression will be put on the element for any given vertical load (lift) at the outer attachment point.
I would use some sort of clamp, with an eye, for the attachment, so as not to weaken the element.  remember that the attachment point becomes a 
high stress point (bending) and will fail at some ice load.

The perfect solution would be a sleeve with tapered wall thickness, so there could be some bending which would spread the stress and move the failure point outward.

Remember, the truss support member will be trying to “fall over”, so the attachment to the boom must provide the stability to hold the support 
member vertical.
