Thanks for the advice from all.
I did try to get three pair started of each size and none wanted to start with the dings first to engage.  It would be hard to do it that way, if even possible.  Makes sense but I thought asking first would avoid another potential painful lesson.  I have a lot of 'scars' from prior assumptions that were wrong!

Experience [my own] has been the nut will seldom /'start' /with the dings first or to the inside, but rather the starting with the non dings allowing the threads to first pass thru the nut body then begin to grab onto the threads as the threads pass thru the nut body.  Short answer ? 
dings to the outside..
