Some pipe trivia: 

Any Schedule of 1" trade size has O.D. of 1.315" 

Sch 40 1 1/4" trade size has I.D. of 1.380"   

The smaller pipe will fit into the larger one with a 32.5 mil clearance 

Any Schedule of 1 1/2" trade size has O.D. of 1.900" 

Sch 80 2" trade size has I.D. of 1.939" 

The smaller pipe will fit into the larger one with a 19.5 mil clearance 

Any Schedule of 2 1/2" trade size pipe has an OD of 2.875" 

Alum irrigation pipe with 3" OD and standard 0.065" wall has an I.D. of
2.870" 

The smaller pipe will fit into the larger one with 2.5 mil clearance 

Yes that IS snug, especially in the two pieces are not perfectly
circular, which 

they never are.  A rubber mallet may be called for.  Hi. 

I have taken advantage of all of these accidental fittings many times to
build various homebrew sliding or rotating joints, etc.
