on 160M from a small lot. It's mostly about radial systems and other

The short answer is that by going cheap/simple/limited on the radial 
system, you're losing some of the gain you hope to achieve with the 
4-square. You won't notice the loss on RX, but you'll lose a few dB at 
the other station to get over his noise.
