The Knaack box I have would be quite large for that kind of application, 
and it would be kind of a chore to be always reaching in from the top.  
But something like that would work fine. I'd rather find something with 
a door that opens so you can get at it horizontally.  The standard top 
opening box probably isn't rain tight if you mount it sideways.  I'm 
sure they're available, having encountered them "in the field" as it 
were, but don't recall the mfr. It might also be more expensive than the 
job box.

I see from the Knaack website they actually make cabinets - they're not 
as inexpensive as the thing you put in the back of a pickup, and there 
may not be cheap knockoffs available, either.


The search term is NEMA 3R - consider also things like ventilation (and 
screens to keep bugs and critters out)

As to punching the holes, sure.
