Story I got (back in the mid 70's) was that 1/4" galvanized aircraft cable
was good for 7000 lbs.
1/4" Galvanized winch cable was good for 5700 lbs.
1/4" SS winch cable was good for 4200-4500 lbs.

That's a big difference between 4200/4500 lbs..... and 7000 lbs.

SS winch cable, like 1/4", is typ used on sailboats etc. But they also
factor in that SS is not as strong, so they use the next size up. IE:
instead of 3/16" galvanized winch cable, they will use 1/4" SS.

I would be real leery about using SS. You might want to run it past UST,
and see what they say abt it. Galvanized winch cable is way down from
galvanized aircraft cable...and SS is down a bunch more.

Ok, just looked up 1/4" SS cable in 7x19 format...using 304 alloy. Rated
at 6400 lbs, so I stand corrected. It's not that expensive either.
