 I strongly suggest you don't use any abrasives. The opportunity for removing plating is too great.
A Pink Pearl pencil eraser will do the job beautifully.

up nicely and now makes good contact.
LIGHTLY is the key word here. You don't want to take off the plating on
the wire.
