For those interested, please add the following "clues"?
Icom rig, homebrew interface
CQWW CW test (I was practicing)
paddle, keyer, PTT used
antenna & P/S. 
Nothing else connected.

As I was practicing, I did not log too many Qs--about 100.

This problem was observed primarily in S & P mode.
It was particularly annoying because it did not leave any spaces between
the "serial number" column and the callsign.
