[TRLog] ESC key blues

Hi all,

obviously there is need for some more discussion on this, so here my
opinion:

I am quite comfortable with how TR reacts on certain keystrokes,
including the escape key. All is very logical, except for exiting S&P
with ESC. Usually, in computing, ENTER takes you forward, ESC takes you
back. That is also what the manual says. Now, for me (and obviously many
others), switching from S&P mode to CQ mode is not a matter of going
back somewhere. It is just two different operating modes, similar to CW
and SSB. When you are "back" in CQ mode in SSB with everything empty,
another <ESC> COULD switch you "back" to CW (isn't that the more basic
mode of ham radio?) or switch mode and/or band to the values set in the
config file. Of course, TR does not do this, and why?: Because you don't
expect to work the ESC key that way.

So, I'm in favour of not ESCing from S&P mode to CQ mode. TR should work
as the status line already says:
You are in the Search And Pounce mode. Press Shift-Tab to exit.
This seems correct to me: TAB to get in, Shift-TAB to get out.

Now, as part of the users like to have it as it is, I second the
proposal to have a configuration option. As Shift-TAB already works,
only ESC needs to be disabled in this situation. Don't know if it is
much work to program. Something like
ESC FROM SAP ENABLE = FALSE
could do it.

Of course, having S&P mode as the basic mode (i. e. swapping everything
so that ESC in empty window takes you from CQ mode to S&P mode!) would
do it also. What about
LITTLE PISTOL MODE ENABLE = TRUE
for that?
Yes, I know I will end up sending DE DL2ZAV instead of CQ, but I can
quickly add TEST on the paddle and only TR users will notice the
error...

After using TR 6.35 this weekend I was reminded of some recent
discussion on
this reflector concerning the means to exit S&P mode. The biggest
problem I
had was with the ESC key causing unwanted return to CQ mode. I am now
strongly
in favor of disabling ESC for this purpose or letting it be a config
option.
For us pop-guns in contests like ARRL_DX S&P is not a sub-mode of CQ to
be
ESC'ed from, it is the only viable mode. I found myself developing a
conditioned reflex to slam ESC when something went awry, which it did
about

...
Since TAB gets you into S&P, it is logical to have Shift-TAB get you
out.
