Thanks for all the postive and helpful suggestions and ideas. I made a cable
with a 2N3904 from my junkbox, a 1K resistor inside a metal DB-9 connector,
with about 6' of RG-58AU to the keyer plug. It worked the first time, I was
amazed. One other note. My FT-990 has two keyer jacks, and I found I can
also use my paddles through an external keyer. This seems simpler than
another cable to the computer just for paddle keying. Am I missing
something, some features of the program, or is this acceptable? Thanks to
everybody again.
