No Andy. The reference was concerning single ops. Packet Cluster is
really another operator so is therefore is allowed in multi-op categories.
At Contest Cumbria, M0CMU/P, we are planning to have DX Cluster
but may have problems finding a suitable VHF path, in which case we
will rely on our s & p skills which will probably be just as good anyway.
At least in this event it is only single mode, as against IOTA where you
need to be searching both sections of a given band.
Propagation knowledge will play an important part as always. It is important
to know, for example, when JA/Asia peaks on 40m, or when 10m is open to
South America.
I prefer the current rules, you can have a second operator being utilised
instead of getting bored and it is a good way to give lesser experiencd
operators
some valuable tuition.
Just hope the wx holds out for contest cumbria, the group that goes a dot
further.
See you there. 73 Chris G3SJJ

Erm. Isn't this exactly what we have in SSB Field Day this coming weekend?
At the time the rules changed a couple of years back I made the point that
the explicit allowing of packet assistance in the restricted section would
be discouraging to smaller groups (like ours) who had no packet radio
equipment. With a noticable emphasis these days on encouraging new blood
into contesting, a 100W section that only allows one transmitter, one
receiver, one single element antenna and NO packet access would be useful in
encouraging more small groups to participate. Notice I prefer not to allow a
2nd receiver.
This is not sour grapes. Last year we came 2nd with no packet access
(restricted section). This year we have it because we've been forced down
that route. A change of rules in line with my suggestions would mean a lot
of unique technology we've developed would be made redundant, but I believe
it would level the playing field more and encourage newcomers. It'll be
interesting see what difference packet assistance makes. Watch out GRS/SOA!
See you as M0CAM/P this weekend!
73,
Andy, G4KNO.
PS: Sorry for apparant delay. I've not been in the country.
