Yeah, seems to me an important function of a contest reflector
is to help out fellow contesters with technical questions.
I replied privately to John saying I had never used a balun on this
sort of antenna, glad to see plenty of other postings bearing this
out. An inverted V with 90 degree apex angle will have an impedance
close to 50 ohms, and I have always found the match to be pretty
good. We used inverted vees on 30, 40 and 80 at GB50, no baluns,
and they worked just fine.
I think it's important to run the coax along (or under) the ground, which
helps to ensure there's no current on the outside of the coax. Try to
run the feeder vertically down from the feedpoint, as close as you can
to the tower. As for bending the ends, try to bend in three dimensions
e.g. from the tower to one corner of the garden, then along horizontally,
then back along the opposite fence. When I lived in East Peckham I
managed to bend one leg of a topband dipole around in a 50ft by 10ft
back garden, with the other leg out into a field. Centre was only up 30ft
and it worked just fine.
