CALLSIGN: G4TSH/P
CONTEST: RSGB-AFS-CW
CATEGORY: SINGLE-OP 80M HIGH CW
CLAIMED-SCORE: 2320
CLUB: Echelford ARS
The /P operation this year involved a trip to a local (G0VDZ) who has a
slightly bigger garden than me :-)
Spent 4 hours putting up a 47 ft pole to support a dipole, cobbled together
from various bits of ali tube, topped with a carbon fibre fishing rod
waving about rather precariously in the squalls. The top 25 ft was
essentially unguyed except for the dipole itself!
Band seemed really naff for the first hour, but still had the best rate.
The GM's were really weak to begin with (more so than normal) EU QRM was
much less of a problem than in some previous years, though I note the HA
contest. Thanks to the usual bunch of LY's, 5B4's and a few other Eu for
helping out with the QSO total. A lot of the regular callsigns seemed to
be missing, not sure why this was.
Operated from the 7 by 7 ft garden shed at the bottom of a waterlogged
garden, so had to do the contest in wellies! Heat from the old Drake L7
kept head and torso warm, feet were half frozen! Then had to take it all
down in the dark and lug the gear back to the car and drive home.
I am planning to do CQ 160 from the same QTH in 2 weeks, 3 nights of it!
("Raving Mad" comes to mind :)
