[UK-CONTEST] 80M SSB Contest report - G3NKC

This is exactly what happened to me in SSB AFS, but in my case it was one of
my own team members! I totally forgot about this session, maybe it was a
good thing!

One interesting point is that in AFS most competitive stations would be
using SCAD (Standard Contesting and DXing) Power, ie 800 to 1200w, with a
few using S+CAD, 1500-2500w, yet in the 80m CC with everyone using 100w,
there were still problems.

A few thoughts come to mind :

- When propagation is favourable to UK on 80m, you don't need an amp. With
100w and an average inter-G antenna, ie a dipole at 35 to 50ft, you can
still create a potent sounding signal, say, indicated S9 plus 30 to 40dB or
even more. (and one that will get the whingers going!)

- Might be worth limiting AFS to 100w. I would be happy to go along with
that.

- The band slots need looking at, plus communication to all and sundry that
these popular competitive and operator training events are taking place. (A
bit of marketing, dare I say.)

Can only say it from my side - I had a good freq from the "off";  and both
you and M0AJT did work me in S&P early on.  Someone else did go HF of me,
and gave less problems, and then gave up.

You jumped in; spoilt a QSO with a weaker M3  station, never moved up, and
in fact, when I squeezed lower; I think you followed me down.  You also
ignored my request to move higher (again, I never knew where M0AJT settled)
You were 59+ even on my frequency; so I had to face carrying on, which I
did, but at the expense of the weaker stations; and it spoilt my score

I'm not so naive to think that this does not happen in a contest Dave; but
on this occasion, you tried to get into a gap that was not there, or that
was bound to cause considerable problem to other users that were already
established.

Look forward to targeting you in future events....

The band was very crowded so I spent a lot of time running up and down the
band
in S+P mode trying to find a frequency. With the Band Map in Writelog I
could see
there were 4kHz between M0AJT and G3NKC. Not ideal because both were loud
with me and probably better placed geographically, in the middle of the
country.

If the two of you had been 3kHz apart I couldn't have squeezed in, but in
this situation
I'm sorry but a 4kHz gap is too much. I suffered as well, but there was no
other slot
on the band at all. For the last half hour I also had to contend with two
stations, Spanish
I think, who came up and started ragchewing 500Hz closer to Dave's
frequency. As he
is further north they may not have troubled him, but they gave me problems.

When drafting the rules we felt that the contests wouldn't need as much
space
as SSB AFS, perhaps we were wrong. The SSTVers seem to start up as soon
as anyone goes near their segment (recommended, not exclusive!), and there
were also several ragchews on the band including a group on 3.750.

I don't think it's appropriate for these contests, but the sprint format is
a great
leveller because then no-one can claim a right to 'their' frequency.
