Stewart,
You recall correctly though I am not sure if the offer of a haggis was a
threat or a promise! Does that mean I now have to make some deal with the
local butcher..............
Regarding MFJ DVK, one of the RF issues concerns how you power the unit.
The PP3 inside will not last a fraction of a major contest. Using all
manner of external mains 12V supplies has proved hopeless....RF, mains hum
etc. However, external beefy 12v battery (I actually use two 6V lantern
batteries in series) fed through a short lead wound on a toroid has been a
simple and effective solution. Although most of my antennas are relatively
far from the shack, the 10m beam isn't and I can beam over the shack and
have no problems with QRO. Used the same DVK and power supply without the
toroid at 9M2RPN while operating very close to the antennas and still had
no problem. Two 6V lantern batteries are good for at least 2-3 48 hr
contests with heavy usage....just make sure the volume pot on the front is
screwed right back.
