Well I don't know about the mfj unit but my homebrew one is based on
the ISD 2590 which is rated at 25ma operating , and only 1mua on
standby.  I've used 4 AA batteries to power it and although its not had
an awful lot of use yet it has had some, probably at least a  contests
worth, and I haven't changed them since I built it last year.
