Thanks all for the replies. 

Adrian, can you get a picture someday of that connector you made? I have
made loads of interesting dipole centres but yours sounds cool with the
drilled out 2p!

Interestingly, I have always used a 4:1 balun on my 40 meter loops and get
about 35 ohms on the MFJ, however that's another discussion. I shall
re-think the feeding.

I was thinking of putting the apex of the loop on one tower only, like an
inverted V, but closed to form a loop like an "A" - not the other way up -
surely OK?

strip them apart - I don't understand. The only electricians wire I know is
ye-olde twin and earth.
