[UK-CONTEST] EU Spring Sprint, SSB

Interesting, Stavros. I was listening on 20m, not sure what time, but lots
of other EU guys calling CQ with sporadic answers. LY9A (LY3BA) was probably
the loudest and widest, also an IK4 I think.

How's this for an excuse for my non-appearance - Went to the local, well 7
miles away, Simsbury's to do the weekly food shop at about 1200. Car park
was not busy, good, will be in and out in half usual time. Oh no, darned
computer system crashed so no check outs working. Phoned them at 1600, yes,
just up again. Off I went, did the shop, collected my box of birthday chocs,
(free for approaching 60 or being a good customer!) Home and put the
shopping away then tune the bands as above before making the evening meal.
OK, someone top that for a feeble excuse.  Chris G3SJJ

Comments:

Once again, I had a great time during the EU Sprint. One of the
highlights of this contest is the high number of young contesters that
participate. It was also nice to see most of the regulars active.

Despite using a beam and HP on 20m I found this band very awkward and
had difficulties getting people to respond to my CQs. This resulted in
a slow first hour and I decided to move to 40m much earlier than
normal (1615 UTC). Conditions on 40m were much better and increased
local activity added some quick QSOs. With 90 QSOs on 40m I set a
personal best for this band but this just goes to show how bad 20m was
from here. Towards the end of the second hour and as most of the
stations moved to 40m I had a quick stint on 20m that paid off as I
was able to work quite a few stations with minimal effort this time
around.

It is encouraging to see more and more G stations show up in the log.
However, as G0MTN mentioned, there is evidence that many casual G
stations seem to be active only on 20m. If these stations could move
on to 40m and 80m this will help improve our score considerably.

All in all a very enjoyable contest. Congrats to GW4BLE and GM3POI.

PS. Any chance we can change the rules to restrict stations to 100W
and dipoles for 20/40/80m at 10m? I think this will make the contest a
tad more interesting and geographical advantages, if any, will become
more evident.
