Yes, totally agree. If the contest is a 'challenge' then it's working. If it's like sitting and shooting fish in a barrel, then it's not a contest. To win contests by sitting and calling CQ is not a good reflection of operator skill (both in the use of the equipment and the use of propogation).

Not at all tongue in cheek; I agree entirely with SVL and for us in
Leicestershire we are at a disadvantage at this time of year. The critical
frequency does not seem to be following any known pattern so the January and
February contests are actually useful.
I would like the contest to stop in May so that we can deal with our
planning and operation of HF and VHF NFD
