I think that some people are missing the point of these contests. This 
forum, by its very definition, is inhabited by dedicated contesters. As I 
understand it, the whole concept of the Club Championship series of contests 
is to try to encourage more of the non-contesting majority out there to 
"give it a try" in the hope that a few may decide that they enjoy contesting 
enough to participate in the "interesting" contests that we all enjoy.

The very essence of these contests is simplicity - no multipliers, one point 
per QSO, one band, one mode. As Clive points out, by the yardstick of 
popularity these contests ARE a success. It has been good to see many new 
callsigns appearing in my log, and good to hear (last night) some nervous 
voices being quietly coached in the background by more experienced 
operators. The HFCC deserves great credit in devising the series, and they 
deserve OUR support.

So, what's in it for the serious contester? Well, perhaps more than you 
think. These contests provide a short, sharp opportunity to fine-tune things 
for other up-coming events. For my part, I do not enjoy SSB contesting 
(slight understatement!!!) but I stuck it out for the full 90 minutes just 
to boost the local club score. And, I asked Santa for some datamode 
equipment largely to allow participation in the third part of these 
contests.

If all that is not enough, well perhaps the cupboard under the sink is a 
viable alternative!!!
