Of course one could hold any run frequency by running considerably more
(illegal)power than absolutely anyone else?

Likewise Bob. We aren't in the world of Sunday morning nets here,
you're
going to go wherever you can make your best score. Running is all
about
having enough clout to hold a frequency against all comers, whether you
dive
in when a runner is off on his second VFO, or edge up to avoid QRM to
YOU.
In these events there is no such thing as a clear frequency awaiting
you. I
have to say that expecting to artifically hold a channel before the
contest
starts is asking for trouble and you're likely to get it unless you're
strong enough to make diving in counter-productive.

In a recent AFS CW write-up in the Bulletin it was made clear that
anyone
who left his run frequency to call elsewhere had forfeited any notional
right he may have had to it. Chris might remember the incident that
gave
rise to that ruling ;)
