[UK-CONTEST] Lacking in memory

Chris,

I don't see why you have a problem. I am running Win98SE on a 1GHz
Athlon machine with 512MB memory. I run AVG anti-virus, Spybot, Norton
System Doctor, Zone Alarm on a 'permanent' basis. In addition to the
usual Windoze background tasks, there are background programs running to
monitor my printer and scanner, and also the atomic clock synch.
RXCluster is running all the time. I can call up Win-EQF (logging) or
MixW (digi-modes) whenever I need them (but they are mutually exclusive
'cos they both want to control the COM: ports).

_On top of_ these 'regulars', I regularly load and run AutoCAD, Word,
Excel simultaneously when I am working, and even with all this running,
I can still pull up and use W6ELprop, and Firefox/Thunderbird, or
IE/Outlook Express for web/e-mail.

It is not true that Win98 doesn't use 512MB memory - it sped up my
system considerably. The Norton System Doctor memory meter hovers
around 23% used at initial start-up, but I have seen it at over 80% when
things are really humming. I suggest, instead, that you have a problem
with your registry and/or swap file. Norton System Works - Optimisation
Wizard will sort out both - I usually run that when things slow down
appreciably!
