When I upgraded to my DG834GT I put all five of my desktop pc's onto
wireless, big mistake, there was just too much congestion. You would
open Internet explorer and have to wait for up to a minute for Google
to appear. The main reason for going to wireless was that I had found
that the UTP patch leads from the router to the pc's were radiating
crud and were raising the noise floor on 6M. When I put all five on
wireless all of the HF bands seemed quieter as well, 80M dropped from
S9 noise level to S5. So to make things faster I put my shack PC and
my wife's back onto wired but using STP (screened) patch leads, this
didn't seem to increase the noise on 80M, 6M or noticeable on any
other band. Now I just have my cluster box and the kid's pc's on
wireless. The cluster doesn't use much bandwidth even with 20 users
logged in so that doesn't affect the throughput to the kid's pc's.
If anyone uses UTP patch leads it's cheap enough to swap to STP, I
bought my leads from http://www.expansys.com just order the length
and the colour you need.
One thing I found with the wireless, if you are using a pci wi-fi
card you can improve the signal strength by using what looks like a
mobile mag-mount base. You can then position the wi-fi antennae on
top of the PC case. When I first set up the wireless network it was
like DXing from one side of the house to the other..
