[UK-CONTEST] Contest Stuff

Dear All,

I'm a little concerned at the comments of late on the reflector about the objective of competitive contesting and new contests. In many respects I often equate our activiies to marathon running. I know a few of us have dabbled a bit in this, but at no time was I ever hoping to win outright every time! I wanted to self train, be confident in my approach, enjoy the experience and share the fun with my fellow competitors. What is particularly analagous with running is you generally bump into the same folk in many events who are running at about the same pace as yourself. Sometimes you even acknowledge each other by name!

What we also do is chose our own style of running and use the equipment as it suits you best. Likewise, I've used a few software packages for contesting and at the moment I like SD. I'm not sure I agree that it is inherently defective either. I think Paul was going to expand on "F" key options in the manual. Yes, I read the manual and then deleted all of the "F" key templates and popped my own in. I did this because I wanted to operate in my own way. Doing this in Stew Perry even won me a plaque! Blimey...

I think also we are all conscious not to disenfranchise new entrants to our wonderful hobby as well, but to nurture them as best as possible. I thought Dave's (BUO) comment about an article was a wonderful idea and this is certainly something I would give out to my RAE candidates along the way. Another great encouragement tool.

Happy contesting

Bob
