As pointed out it all depends where you would like to put your signal and at
what time.
>From here at the start of the contest to put a signal into Southampton in
the first two hours I need anything from 7.9-11.5 degrees elevation angle
and I'm not going to get that from a dipole unless I accept large minus
gains. A vertical or verticals with a very good ground system would be the
starting antenna followed by high dipoles or better. By high I'm not talking
60ft. From tests here a dipole at 75ft does not outperform my vertical
system.
However my 80m vertical has in the order of 6 miles of radials, probably
overkill but it works.
