Started the contest on time trawling up and then down the band, but wasn't getting heard and other GM's were! I can only call a loud G station 5 times before I lose it completely! Went and had a late lunch at 1430, and returned at 1530 refreshed and raring to go. I then did another trawl and settled down on 3655 and ran from 1615 until the end. I switched to the vertical (from the dipole) at 1730 and this seemed to pull in another layer even at that late stage. Finished with 230 and no dupes, which is my best in an AFS SSB. I was part of the GMDX team.
I normally hate the SSB event as it's frustrating calling the likes of 'SJJ and being beaten 4 or 5 times by a station who you can't even hear! Noticed that a number of stations have given up on phonetics. Also noticed that there were a lot of GMs around, especially from the Aberdeen area which can only be good.
Not sure what to make of the suggestions for team size changes. This can have a different effect up here where the geographical spread of stations in even a small club can be quite large. I don't actually think it's broken. My 2p, FWIW.
73 and many thanks for all the Q's.
