[UK-CONTEST] GB5HQ

It might be worth a reminder that, for many years, GB5HQ was a modest
single-station effort from Potters Bar. Then the playing field changed when
HQ stations were able to set up from many sites and compete with each other.
Steve G4JVG, so I am told, took the initiative at WRTC in Finland 3 years
ago, to try and get a new-style GB5HQ in place. Since then (not a very long
period) GB5HQ has gone from strength to strength, thanks in substantial
measure to Dave G4BUO who took up the poisoned chalice of trying to
co-ordinate things. But many others have put in a vast effort, not least
John G3WGV who has modified StarLog to accommodate the complex requirements
(it appears to have worked somewhat better than Wintest, which is used by
several European groups, and is substantially easier to network than
Writelog).

And as I tried to say in an earlier post (while still exhausted from the
weekend!), the effort relies totally on private individiuals opening up
their home stations, which means their homes. There simply aren't the sort
of club stations in the UK which would do the job. This is why the hosts
must have final say on who operates, etc. It simply cannot be imposed on
them by RSGB or any other external body. This is a classic example of
volunteers working together.
