Don't know how they select them but my theory on the number of QSOs is  quite 
simple. There is a very strong club culture in DL-land. I'm sure like me  
you've all worked strings of DL calls in a contest, first the club call then  
that of all the members. I've noticed it particularly on VHF. I reckon  the club 
culture moves upwards into a national event so when you work one you  work the 
lot in sequence. If that happens on 12 band/mode slots that is a lot of  QSOs!
