[UK-CONTEST] Olympics + GB5HQ Awards

Hullo UK-Contesters,

Yes, it's certainly not too early to start thinking (at least in outline
terms) about special UK Amateur Radio activity around the 2012 Olympics.

The DQ2006 and DR2006 stations were an excellent operation. I enjoyed
working them all (twice, just for the fun of it!) as well as the 250 DLs
needed for the top award.

For the 2012 Olympics how about using 2O12 (that's Two Oscar One Two) as a
special prefix? Yes, it's one of ours all right!

This prefix could be used for a series of special stations, although
probably not on an individual station basis because like with the GE's
(1977) and the GQ's (2002), there is the inevitable problem/muddle with
losing the DXCC identifier from the prefix.

Only a thought - but I'll nevertheless be keeping a copy of this E-mail,
just in case this idea is ever used - hi!

PS : It was noted on this reflector recently that the DARC offers several
awards in relation to activity during the IARU Contest. These awards are a
good idea. There is also a series of Awards for GB5HQ which are organised
and managed by John G3LZQ. The idea of adding further Awards, particularly
one for working GB5HQ on all band-modes in a record time is certainly worth
thinking about for next year. In case you haven't noticed, there's a full
set of photos of the 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 GB5HQ operations on the
www.GB5HQ.com web-site. There are also lists of the GB5HQ Award winners for
the past three years. Perhaps some of the comments seen on this reflector
would have been more tempered, if there had been a closer look made of the
GB5HQ website before rushing into print. Or then again, perhaps not!
