Hi Chris,

First let me say I entirely support the GB5HQ efforts and know full well the
effort that must go into it. As far as organisation and team selection goes
I can see where the argument for "democratic" selection was coming from but
I have been around long enough to also appreciate that in reality it is a
case of the "willing horse" when it comes to actually getting things done
and pushing such endeavours forward. I suspect that if it was to be done
"democratically" that in fact very little would happen, it is always down to
a few dedicated individuals in the end!

Despite what you say about us all "knowing about the high level of support
for some time" I can't say I was entirely aware of that until very recently.
I would be the first to admit I am a "casual contester" but perhaps the fact
that a pro contesting person like me did not know that, maybe suggests the
GB5HQ message is not as widely spread as it might be. There was certainly
very little awareness of the GB5HQ event at my local club. If you want as
many people as possible to support GB5HQ next year maybe a PR person should
be appointed to specifically sell the event. That would probably produce
more qso's next time, rather than addressing the converted? The target
operators being the same op's who enjoy collecting windmills, lighthouses
and special GB callsigns. As well as contesters of course.

Alex

I agree with you Peter, and thanks for comments re GB5HQ team.

We have all known for some time about the high level of "support" given

by the DLs in IARU, so I was disappointed by the reaction of UK Contest
Reflectees when I raised the point before this year's event of using

club callsigns etc.

If there is to be any chance of increasing UK % then it must initially

come the subscribers to this group. We should be getting 100% backing,

(well 99.9999% taking ELP in to account) that anyone with access to

another callsign should use it..

There is a no reason at all why lots of Special Contest Calls shouldn't

call us, and of course, the actual Club callsign behind those. For

example, G8D is an NOV to M0CMU, therefore 24 QSOs for a start. 21 of

these would give us another 500 QSOs.

I was also most disappointed to read the comments from one Reflectee who

criticised us for closing 10m down and maybe missing 3 QSOs, and then

took delight in telling us he purposely denied us of 6 QSOs. I have

never understood the business about "I don't work CW" or "I don't work

SSB" particularly when it means not be able to support the local Cub or

National Team. Have they really got the inability to press F5 and then

F2 ??

To summarise :

1 - I reckon it is perfectly acceptable to mobilise whatever callsigns

we can in order to compete with the Germans and Poles

2 - Support should start here on the Reflector

3 - This can then be carried to Clubs and friends.

You give us the support, we'll deliver the goods. Win, win ... and WIN.
