[UK-CONTEST] Is is just us Brits?

I have a lot of sympathy for Tom's view.
What does it matter which HQ station "wins" IARU. There are no cash prizes
or trips to Bermuda. Surely the role of the HQ stations is to help increase
activity, as GB5CC does in the Commonwealth Contest. A bit of friendly
rivalry (making up for World Cup 1966 maybe) by all means, but beyond that,
so what? The HQ stations are also a chance for experienced contesters to get
their hands on decent stations and run pile-ups, for others to go along and
get some experience (yes, there were plenty of those at the various GB5HQ
stations) and for all to have fun (like Field Day).
WRTC was different - these are teams who have gone specifically to compete
on as level a playing field as can be created (though that's pretty well
impossible in this game), and it is unreasonable that some should have a
"national" advantage as this rather defeats the object (one correspondent on
the US contest reflector suggested that WRTC should be CW only to prevent
the operators being identified - naive in the extreme - talking to previous
WRTC attendees in Brazil I was made aware of 101 ways in which operators can
identify themselves within minutes of the contest starting, regardless of
mode!).
Actually, probably the only way to have a true "level playing field" in this
game is to run the contest (whichever it is) using simulation software on a
PC. But that doesn't nothing for encouraging on-air activity!
