I agree with Chris's last line especially, this debate is totally
unnecessary.
I can't speak for other organisations, but RSGB has ALWAYS cross-checked
the logs entered for its contests. The one exception I'm aware of is the
IOTA contest one year. Someone spotted that claimed scores equalled
final scores and the story got around that RSGB didn't check contests.
This is utterly untrue and a slight on those HFCC members and
volunteers who spend hundreds of hours every year checking these events.
One interesting point from the 80m CC events which I check. You'd think
the stations making more QSOs would have more errors, but the reverse is
true and when you think about it, that's not altogether surprising after
all. Not only have the guys at the top spent time and effort optimising
their station (antenna particularly) but they have developed contest
experience and a large part of this is working on accuracy.
On the other hand, some lower down the table are new to contesting,
perhaps antenna challenged and on CW, often using rigs without a CW IF
filter. Proportionally, they make far more errors. This is not a
criticism, indeed I would like aspiring contesters to see it as a
challenge to improve their accuracy and skills, and move up the table.
BTW plans are progressing well for GB5HQ. Please visit the excellent web
site www.gb5hq.com put together by G3TXF. It's not too late to encourage
all your club members who have supported the 80m CC events in large
numbers, to come on and work us this year. There are awards for working
us on 3, 6, 9 or all 12 band/mode slots. Once again we will be networked
together using John G3WGV's Starlog, so you can call us and we should be
able to tell you what frequencies the other stations are on. DA0HQ's
success is partly built on working an amazing number of Germans. Dare I
say at this time of the World Cup that we need to beat the Germans at
their own game!
