40m is simply not large enough for all the activity during the really
major contests, but next weekend there is a great opportunity for Gs to
work some great CW DX on that and other bands, including VK, ZL and VE.
For those Gs who haven't done it before, a quarter wave vertical on 40m,
some radials and 100w should be sufficient to work long-path VK and ZL
between about 06.00 and 08.00z. We have an advantage here as stations
participating in the contest (known for historical reasons as 'Beru')
will only be looking for contacts with other Commonwealth stations.
The contest is on the five bands 80-10m CW only, starting at 10.00z on
Saturday 11th March. It lasts 24 hours but there is also a 12-hour
section, see http://www.contesting.co.uk/hfcc/rules/rberu.shtml for the
full rules. Note there is a separate trophy for the highest placed UK
station using 100w and single element antenna. There's also a
certificate for every station which works 69 band call areas (69 because
that's how many times the contest has run: Beru started in 1931)
SD has full support for the Commonwealth Contest, and so does Win-Test.
