Thanks very much for the replies, both on and off list.

After sending my plea for help yesterday morning, I decided to have a go 
at it anyway. Using a 0.8mm PCB drill to feel inside the holes in the 
plastic pivots, there did seem to be some roughness in the dot pivots 
that wasn't there in the dash pivots, so I very gently twiddled the 
drill in the bottom of the pivot hole until the roughness went away.

The screw that Paul mentioned has never been touched from new, so I left 
that well alone when putting it back together.

When cleaning the contacts as recommended by Chris, I noticed the 
adjustable contacts are not quite square on the ends of the grub screws. 
If the gap is changed afterwards, it might then be using different areas 
of the contacts that didn't get cleaned so well.

It now seems to work OK... but we'll see what happens with the next 
"must-have" DX station!
