As far as I remember the rules in the "old days" allowed for an entrant to 
include a stamped postcard that was posted back on receipt of the log. 
Serious logs were sent by registered delivery as well, sometimes at great 
cost.  I dont remember logs being "lost" back then.

Frankly the RSGB system currently is a shambles.
