Hi Colin, Ray et al
Colin - thanks for the update regarding current OFCOM negotiations -
hopefully the liaison group will meet and listen to representations from the
UK contesting community in due course.
It is worth noting that the current 400W PEP output limit was agreed in the
1960s - related to the peak envelope power of a 150W DC input AM signal if I
remember correctly.
I understand your concerns, Ray, but the reality in 2006 is that it is
almost impossible to be competitive in the high-power or open section of
major HF contests from the UK (especially the N of the UK) with the current
power limit.
It is also erroneous to assume that amplifier purchasing is the only way to
assemble a high-power station - there are still enthusiastic amplifier
constructors around - let's not dismiss this as 'cheque-book' radio.
I would think it is reasonable to link some form of temporary high-power
permit to Special Contest Callsigns, if necessary limited to perhaps only
e.g. 6 major HF contests each year. With suitable 'non-interference' clauses
I can see no problems with this. Any 'radiation hazard' (to the contest
station operators) concerns would not apply - most modern HF contest
stations are minimising RF in the shack by a variety of methods.
