Too true Chris, except I haven't built one for 25 years now and by
coincidence I found a photograph of it yesterday. I guess it was quite
tame compared with today's standards. Just a pair of 3-500s with about
3kV on the anodes. Sadly the guy I sold it to died recently so it might
just find its way back here!

Seem to remember my first amp was a pair of 5B254Ms for 160m DXing back
in the late 60s after a visit to some well known 160m enthusiasts down
south, it certainly beat trying to extract a few measly watts out of a
5763!! Interesting how things move on, single 813 then a pair, single
4-400 then a pair, single 3-500 then a pair. All for 160m DXing, except
the last one which was for contesting. My dream was always a 4-1000 but
never realised it, but again by coincidence, I recently visited an 80m
SSB DXer (not contester) who had a really neat looking 2 piece 4-1000
jobbie. A cool 2kW.

It's strange that people only associate higher power with contesting yet
tend to forget that most succesful DX Chasers over the last 60 years or
so, many of whom were not contesters, used amps that many of us
contesters would love to own! The QRO Grumblers phenomenon is a bit like
teenagers discovering sex. They always think it is just been invented!
