[UK-CONTEST] Running DOS under XP

I need to run some DOS contest programs on my XP machine.  When I open them the DOS box flashes up then disappears!  I am sure the solution has been discussed here before so if anyone has the answer could you please drop me a direct email to save clogging up the reflector.  I will post the solution here for future reference.
