Adrian,

This has turned out to be an interesting thread. As you are asking for 
opinions, here are mine.

As you specifically mentioned VHF work, 400m feeder runs are pretty much 
out, so go for the distant shack. Although the Imperial College radio 
club had a run of LDF 450 that was several hundred meters long (which 
went under a main road in Kensington), there were remote LNAs/PAs i.e. 
240VAC at the far end.

As a regular generator user for /p work, don’t do it. They are a PITA. 
Run mains to the shack.

If a long cold walk is too much for a tune around. Why not use some of 
the Internet remote base technology to enable you to listen from your 
laptop in the sitting room? I have virtually no space, so have just 
moved 95% of my gear to the loft and control much of it over my wifi 
network. Look at http://www.dh7fb.de/ for a rough idea of how it could work.
