>>> think the exchange in Club Calls is likely to put them off for life

Well said Ian. It's a different matter if we had this on 2m SSB or perhaps
even 80m but many hams don't have 160m antennas and the ones that do are
looking at a major compromise with a manual ATU to get on the band so with
QSB and QRN and hopeless operating, the whole thing is a dog's breakfast for
many of us.

It would be a different matter if I had a dipole at 120 feet or something
but having such long contest exchanges with the technical difficulties that
I faced, I'll think twice before doing this one again, unless all I had to
capture was a serial number, then it might be worth a shot.

Of course, the Smarties didn't help - but maybe it really was that
frustrating?

Still feeling "Grrr" :)

C.

I guess the answer, at least partly, rests within the stated aim of the
contest:

to encourage contacts between Affiliated Societies... and to encourage new
licensees to operate under appropriate supervision.

I assume that the encouragement to new licensees is as much to operate in a
contest environment, as opposed to just operating. If that is the case, I
think the exchange in Club Calls is likely to put them off for life.

Ian
