Reading Jonathan's excellent exposition, I picked up on the VMWare section.
We use VMWare (ESX) commercially at work to run our Win2K3 servers on. The
Windows servers are actually virtual servers and run on a VERY large box
which is running Linux as the base operating system, then we can have any
number of Windows servers (resources permitting) running within the
Linux/VMWare environment. This makes creating new servers etc etc - very
simple indeed.
In terms of what this means to you, Clive, you could run a Linux machine
up - run VMWare on it and within that an XP O/S. It would work fine. From
memory, I think there's a VMWARE Workstation product which you can use for
free - but don't quote me on that when the FAST people come round.
But as Bob, 5B4AGN alludes to - this is a fairly major project and will take
you beyond end-user computing. Which, of course, is fine and could be great
fun. You might end up spending more time playing computers than radio though
;-)
