I guess that's why I don't see these problems.  After a couple of 
unsatisfactory brushes with USB, I scuttled right back to RS232.

I have no idea whether the problem is in the USB standard or in the way XP 
treats it. Even less idea whether Mac would be an improvement.

Hopefully, whichever direction you take will yield a solution.
