Night time Es are quite a common occurrence throughout the year. Such
events are often missed. You can see one here:

The blob at about 0300 is Es. This was an observation in September.
I guess that such events may be the result of Es at the magnetic conjugate
in the Southern hemisphere?
The E layer is much more active and important at HF than is suggested by
many amateur radio articles on propagation. For the interested, I can
recommend "Ionospheric Radio" by Davies ISBN 0 86341 186 X.
