Ian,
I used this reference and it worked well:

No long wire leads, no extra board and no pots, just a capacitor soldered
directly under the RF board and a resistor & capacitor soldered directly
under the IF board.
After the mod on the scope both rise and fall times are nicely rounded over
a few msecs.
