[UK-CONTEST] AFS CW G0AZS or Contesters trust your ears...

Dear All
I only managed to spend a hour and a half operating in the 80M AFS contest this
afternoon having rushed back from a "kids farm" and then had my 4 year old
daughter "helping" in the shack. :-)
Fun nevertheless and thanks to all who managed to hear and work me.
Anyway my main point is this... A few of you may have been relying too much on
the "super check" function of your logging software and less on your excellent
ears.
More than twice this afternoon, a station either wanted to change my call to
G0AZH or they asked to check my call again.
Until recently G0AZS wasn't in most master call databases as I had only been
contesting with K1UG as I was bitten by the contest bug when living abroad. I
managed to update that recently for the "master" and "RTTY" databases where
G0AZS will now be found... but it's amazing how many people fall back to what
the software suggests (with an "old" database) rather than what they hear.
...And no, it's not "s" and "h" just being close in CW. This is a typical
example quite likely to happen in a RTTY contest that illustrates the point and
the consequences:
CQ TEST DE GXXXX CQ
DE G0AZS G0AZS
G0AZS 599 xxx xxx G0AZS
GXXXX TU 599 xxx xxx DE G0AZS
>>slight pause...
G0AZH TU DE GXXXX QRZ
G0AZS G0AZS G0AZS G0AZS
>>another pause...
CALL IS G0AZS G0AZS??
RRRR G0AZS G0AZS
G0AZS TU DE GXXXX QRZ
As you can see it does nothing for my rate... such as it is... or the other
station too.
So ladies and gentlemen my plea is... trust your ears... pretty much all of you
get it right first time... or at least please download the latest master
database(s):-)
Thanks again for all the QSO's this afternoon and looking forward to the next
one.
73.. Marc G0AZS,K1UG
