Try this,

Monitor yourself with a separate ssb receiver while speaking on another SSB
rig, then shift the tuning on the monitoring receiver slightly so that you
are listening to yourself with slightly frequency shifted speech.
I find it almost impossible to speak!

I can understand the symptoms you describe, Clive and wonder if it is the
SSB equivalent of not being able to send CW and have a conversation at the
same time? Interesting!
