This may or may not be useful in the context of the above, but BT have a line
test menu, accessible by dialling 17070. It includes things like 'quiet
line' (silence) and 'ringback' (the exchange rings you back automatically). It's
great for checking that internal extensions are wired correctly for ring
capability. There maybe some other useful functions also.
