You are correct, you need to exchange the first two letters of your postcode
(like CO for Colchester) and your locator (like JO01KW).

The full contest exchange, in the generally accepted order is "report &
serial number", then "locator" and finally "code".

The VHFCC website is somewhat light on information about the correct 
exchanges for the contest.

Whilst a postcode is required (and I have just found out that its only 
the first two letters), is the full grid reference also give/required?
